Braided Crop Top DIY

A simple little DIY to tackle on your Saturday afternoon. Enjoy.

Here's a before and after shot. I bought mine a few sizes too big so that it would fit really loosely, but that bit is really up to the wearer themselves.

Supplies: Jersey knit tank top, needle and thread, scissors, optional* strip of lace of sheer fabric. First, cut off the bottom of the tank. I laid a crop top I already owned on top of it so that I would cut it at the perfect length. Then, with the extra fabric you have, cut three strips for the braid. Optional* add a bit of texture by adding a strip of another fabric to one of the original strips. The reason I added it to a strip instead of replacing a strip was so that it would still remain thick. Next, sew them all together, folding the edges in so that the front looks nice and clean. Sew this end onto the top of one sleeve. Then, begin braiding! For a looser braid, slightly tug the braid outwards, as if fluffing it out before stitching the other end onto the shoulder. Once you've attached the other end of the braid, go back through and add small stitches, connecting the braid to the neckline.

Tip* Since it's a jersey knit you won't have to worry about fraying. However, I added a few stitches to the ends of the seam lines where I cut off the extra fabric for the braid. This way, I won't have to worry about it unraveling at the sides.

I'm off to shoot an engagement session then to a show some of our dear friends are playing at. Have a lovely Saturday.

  20. This is a great tutorial-but I'm wondering, did you have trouble with your shirt being really front heavy? I've done this with a shirt before and it made the neckline scoop so much that the added braid detail didn't look right.

    1. It's not too heavy at all. I think because the braid is loose it helps with that problem a bit. You should give it another try!
